ABSTRACT
In the context of rapid rural transformation in China, traditional villages face challenges such as spatial decline, cultural loss, and reduced vitality. Public spaces play a key role in sustaining social life and local identity. This study examines the regeneration of public spaces in Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, using Konghuxi Village as a case study. Based on field observation and spatial analysis, the research identifies issues including underutilized spaces and fragmented spatial structure. Applying catalytic theory, the study proposes small-scale, targeted interventions in key “catalyst spaces,” such as streets and communal nodes. It had proved that public spaces such as streets, ancestral halls, drying yards, and communal squares are central to village life, supporting social interaction and cultural continuity. The study shows that catalytic theory is effective for traditional village regeneration. The findings suggest that catalytic regeneration can effectively enhance spatial vitality, improve living conditions, and preserve cultural identity. This approach offers a practical and adaptable framework for the sustainable regeneration of public spaces in traditional villages.
