ABSTRACT
The fast-growing urban development in arid areas is accompanied by multiple ecological and social issues that need unique solutions in landscape architecture design. This paper explores King Abdullah II Gardens in Amman, Jordan, as an example of how ecological sustainability can be combined with cultural heritage in the design of urban parks. Based on qualitative analysis that includes spatial observation, user experience assessment, and literature review, this work evaluates King Abdullah II Gardens from three interrelated perspectives: ecological performance, cultural identity, and social interaction. According to the findings, the garden is designed to reduce the negative impact of the urban heat island effect and promotes biodiversity through planting native plants. Moreover, the park is designed to contribute to social cohesion by organizing cultural events and activities for the local community. In addition, King Abdullah II Gardens feature elements of Jordanian culture while implementing ecological concepts like water-saving irrigation and solar energy usage. As a result, the discussed case study shows that the park represents a sustainable type of landscape that can be used in arid urban areas.
