ABSTRACT
Against the backdrop of globalization and standardized urban development, shaping urban cultural spaces with distinct cultural identity and a strong sense of spiritual belonging has become a key issue in contemporary urban design. As urban cultural spaces are increasingly homogenized, bookstores—critical vessels that embody urban spirit and convey regional context—have expanded far beyond the single function of displaying books and providing reading services. They now serve as urban windows showcasing local characteristics and indigenous culture. Chengdu, a city celebrated for its leisurely lifestyle and profound cultural heritage, hosts a large and diverse group of bookstores. Among them, local brands Jianshan Bookstore and Sanhua Academy stand out with distinctive Western Sichuan cultural features. Their regionalized spatial design practices offer a valuable and unique case for addressing the aforementioned issue. This paper examines how local cultural vocabularies are translated and integrated into modern bookstore spaces through design, achieving the inheritance and innovative expression of regional culture while satisfying contemporary functional needs. It further reveals the inherent relationships among architectural form, spatial experience, and cultural identity, proposing a place-based approach for the localized design of modern urban cultural spaces.
