ABSTRACT
Green spaces constitute one of the fundamental components of urban space and play an important role in shaping the residential environment. The planning of green space systems in the context of residential development is not only an important design issue but also a scientific one. The authors compare the green space layouts of housing estates and residen-tial complexes built in Poznań and Brno during selected time periods. The focus is on de-velopments from the second half of the 20th century and contemporary examples. The article presents a preliminary overview of broader and more detailed research into the de-sign of green systems integrated with residential development in Poland and Czech Repub-lic. The aim is to answer questions regarding the changing principles of green space plan-ning in the context of the formal and functional transformations taking place in residential architecture and urban planning. The discussion also addresses contemporary trends con-sistent with the principles of sustainable development. The significance of green spaces in mitigating the negative effects of urbanisation and improving environmental conditions is analysed. An analysis of green spaces in the housing estates of Poznań and Brno indi-cates the existence of slightly different urban planning models resulting, among other things, from varying site conditions. By comparing selected ex-amples of residential structures and their accompanying green spaces, the fol-lowing conclusions can be drawn. In Poznań’s developments, more systemat-ic, geometric models are found. In Brno, we are dealing with a landscape-based, naturalistic model.
