Spatial planning in urbanized areas is essential element of the implementation of the city development strategy and a tool for achieving its fundamental goals. The planned devel-opment of urban space allows for the realization of long-term visions that take into ac-count the sustainable development of the city by implementing tasks such as environmen-tal protection, infrastructure development, extension of services, improvement of the quali-ty of life of residents and increasing the competitiveness of the city in comparison to other centers. In view of climate change, city authorities must strive to reduce the negative im-pact on the environment, and one of the main tools in this regard is the implementation of renewable energy sources (RES). Another important aspect is energy security and the pur-suit of independence from changes in the availability and fluctuations of resource prices. The article discusses how appropriately spatially planned urbanized areas can significantly increase the energy potential of the city, contributing to its sustainable development. Spe-cific examples of actions within the city's spatial policy that have already been undertaken in Bydgoszcz will be presented, as well as the possibilities for further development of re-newable energy sources in the urban space, taking into account the needs and possibilities of this city.
