ABSTRACT
In recent years, the construction of new large-scale hospitals that meet the demands of the modern world has been taking place in some European countries. This phenomenon is particularly evident in the United Kingdom and Denmark. In other countries, in turn, there are plans to build such hospitals in the next decade. Most often, these facilities have an avant-garde form on a large scale representing super units that provide medical care to a large region. They feature a range of modern and environmentally friendly architectural solutions. They are also examples of the digitalisation of medical care and the shaping of an environment focused on the comfort of patients and users. One can also encounter the name of these facilities as 'super hospitals'. The aim of this article is to present the charac-teristics of this type of facility against the background of historical and contemporary conditions related to the architecture of healthcare facilities. The research material consists of six super hospitals (from Estonia, Hungary, Denmark and the UK). The research pre-sents, among other things, the most important architectural characteristics of super hospi-tals in the context of contemporary tendencies in the design of healthcare facilities in Eu-rope.
