ABSTRACT
Walkability is the subject of a multidisciplinary organizational effort, so it should im-prove quality and health of life in urban and rural areas. Subject of this article is analysis of the current trends of walkability development in Poland and finding elements that will increase the attractiveness of walking, creating better walkability both in free time and on the way to and from work. Issues related to the selection of proper planning tools that can encourage pedestrians to be more active and the validity of the walking strategy develop-ment guided the paper. Some simple schemes like connecting green public and private space, green corridors, and continuity of walking networks, public shortcuts, countryside paths and trails, improved wayfinding provided by urban and rural planning can contribute to the improvement and promotion of walkability according to the theorethical approach of the “walkable city” and “walkable neighbourghood”. The paper recognises the need to invest in walking infrastructure and the importance of coordinated evidence-based action that will lead to physical, social, environmental and economic benefits.
