ABSTRACT
The post-war reconstruction of Kołobrzeg, which had been destroyed by around 90% as a result of the war effort, took place in three stages – spontaneous reconstruction, modernist reconstruction and in the retroversion style. The assumptions, formal solutions adopted and the approach to the architectural heritage were different. Activities focused initially on the reconstruction of the harbour to build an economic foundation, and in the next phase work proceeded in a bipolar manner, concentrating on the health resort and the downtown area. The reconstruction of the old town in the mid-1980s introduced completely new buildings referring to the historical dimensions. The urban planning decisions taken in the process of multi-phase reconstruction created new threats to the city, which are combined with the challenges of the present day. These are above all the progressive territorial expansion and the mono-functionality of the individual nodes of Kołobrzeg’s structural network.
