ABSTRACT
The layout of the historic downtown streets of Kołobrzeg, formed from the time of the fortress' liquidation until the end of the 1930s, has remained almost unchanged to the present day despite the city's wartime destruction. The period of reconstruction which began in the mid 1960s saw the rapid growth of the spa district – separated from the centre by a green belt, a railway track and dispersed buildings – mainly industrial. The need to connect the resort to the rest of the city and open it up to tourists necessitated the creation of new transport links between the eastern part of the city and the resort, which had hitherto only been connected to the west. At the same time, in the 1960s, the roads surrounding the town centre were widened and strengthened, creating a thoroughfare that bypassed the damaged and unattractive old town and the town centre. It connected the eastern part of the city with the industrial port district located along the left bank of the Parsęta River. The article shows the communication relations between the spa and the centre of Kołobrzeg and the urban development that resulted from it.
