The article presents research conducted in selected representative small towns in Greater Poland. Five towns with specific determinants due to their location were selected as samples for the study. The determinants were selected as characteristic towns that meet the following conditions: a town in an agglomeration (Pobiedziska), a tourist town (Sieraków), a town located off the main transport routes (Odolanów), a town with unchanged historical urban layout (Rakoniewice), and, as the fifth town, a town valuable for national culture (Pyzdry). The thesis was adopted that small towns in Greater Poland, similar to towns in Western Europe, will determine the identity of the region and the nature of functional and spatial changes. Therefore, the main objective is to revitalize the economic and social potential of tourism and culture, including giving existing facilities and areas new socio-economic functions, among others through the reconstruction, modernization, and renovation of neglected and unused areas of cities and residential districts in cities. Today, the wave of modernity, which has rapidly swept into small towns and is developing dangerously, poses a great threat to the proper shaping of the historical and cultural urban layout of cities.
