ABSTRACT
The article presents the results of research work on the quality of space at the National Institute of Oncology in Gliwice (NIO), in the context of using AR technology to solve wayfinding problems faced by patients and staff within the Institute’s complex spatial structure. The research task was carried out in two stages: diagnosing issues related to the existing visual information system and developing a prototype application to navigate patients through the Outpatient Clinic area.
A triangulation approach was applied, combining qualitative methods and the Space Syntax method. The results made it possible to identify necessary changes in the Institute's communication space—such as key orientation areas and locations of main decision points that require the implementation of an effective visual information system—and to establish the foundations for tools using AR technology aimed at modifying user experience.
The activities presented also serve as an example of cross-sectoral collaboration between the investor (NIO), a non-governmental organization (Upper Silesian Oncology Foundation), and a university (Faculty of Architecture, Silesian University of Technology).
