ABSTRACT
The revitalization of historical buildings and architectural complexes aims to restore their former glory and utilize their potential in response to the contemporary needs of local communities. An example of such efforts is the Alfa Shopping Center in Białystok, created as a result of transforming the former Becker factory located on Świętojańska Street. This object is not only considered a positive example of revitalization but also of modern architecture in the city. The research presented in the article deals with the issues of industrial complexes from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and their transformations. The primary goal of the research is to characterize the revitalization of the Becker factory and its results. Special attention was given to the extent of preserving historic objects and elements, the chosen method of adapting historical buildings for new functions, relations between the existing, historical, and new urban fabric, as well as the aesthetics of contemporary forms and interiors. The conducted research allowed for a deeper understanding of the revitalization process of post-industrial buildings as an essential element of modern architecture in historical cities. The research methods included literature studies, comparative analysis, interviews with designers, and in situ investigations.
