ABSTRACT
Kolobrzeg is a seaside resort with an extremely rich and turbulent history that began in the early 19th century with the development of the spa district. Affected by wartime destruction, it has lost much of its architectural illustration and the coherence of its spatial structure built on the basis of centuries of experience. Political conditions and the complicated situation of the so-called Recovered Territories in the first decade after World War II significantly delayed the process of rebuilding the city. As a result, work on the development of the empty quarters left by the former buildings only started in the 1960s as a result of higher-level political decisions. They were also related to the orientation of the development of the seaside district of Kolobrzeg back into a spa and resort center. The change in the political situation, the gradually increasing stature of the city and international contacts resulted in numerous architectural realizations within Kolobrzeg, characterized by high quality, comparable in metropolitan centers, differing from the stylized modular architecture of socialist modernism. The article presents unique architectural solutions in the context of shaping the urban fabric of Kolobrzeg and critically analyzes them. It also compares modernist buildings with pre-war realizations in the same area.
