ABSTRACT
n exhibiting, the exhibit or exhibition theme are the main design issues that influence decisions on how the exhibition space will be shaped. A knowledge and understanding of the essence of the problem presented is required. Exhibition design classes have been taught a, and as part of the course, students create a small project for an exhibition-promotional space and each student draws a different exhibition theme from among three thematic groups. Students are free to interpret the topic as part of the task, which requires them to familiarise themselves with it and analyse the issue presented. Compared to previous projects, they analyse not only the location and function, but reach out to knowledge from the fields of culture, history or marketing. The scope of the final project and the learning objectives achieved are the same regardless of the thematic group. The study presented in this article aims to answer the question: does the thematic group influence the design outcomes, creativity and innovation in the approach? Student work reviewed by design professionals was examined and a student survey was conducted, with the aim of assessing baseline knowledge of the subject. The effect of the research is to verify the assumptions adopted that including an analysis of the subject of the exhibition in the design process by, for example, referring to the humanities influences the results achieved and creates an opening for interdisciplinary research.
